An elderly man travels along Nepean Highway on a scooter with police in pursuit.
TRUCKS, buses and cars are often seen speeding along the Nepean Highway, but it's not often you see a man on a motorised scooter.
The volume of traffic didn't deter this elderly man from riding his electric scooter along the highway in Brighton East this month.
The reader who snapped this photo said that she first spotted the man near the Hampton St intersection about 5.30pm on February 10 and immediately dialled 000.
The Bayside motorist told the Leader she made a U-turn after dialling 000 because she was concerned the man could be hit by traffic.
``By the time we got there, there was an unmarked police vehicle pulling up behind him,'' she said.
``He seemed surprised that they should stop him.
``I had hoped he would move into the service lane, as it was quite empty on a Sunday night . . . but he didn't.''
Police escorted the man into the Dick Smith car park at the corner of Hawthorn Rd.
Bayside traffic management unit's Sgt Herb Lonsing said the incident was ``an accident waiting to happen''.
``I've never seen anything like that before,'' he said.
Police tried to direct the man off the road, but he was slow to comprehend, Sgt Lonsing said.
He said police would not lay charges.
